The power of an inclusive classroom

We’re helping students like Luidine get the workbooks they need this year.

These girls really care for each other, but this hasn’t always been the case. When Luidine first joined her classroom, she walked differently and had vision and learning problems.  Wilmaelle wasn’t sure what to think and asked herself, “Can this girl learn? How she can possibly do the things we do?”

The friendship between the girls began when their teacher struggled to figure out how to integrate children with different needs in the classroom. Luidine needed some extra help and there were no Educational Assistants available or other class resources. So the teacher gave the top students the responsibility of helping Lu, and friendship blossomed. One year later, Wilmaelle can barely see a difference between them.

In Haiti, disabilities are often seen as a result of a curse. Fear and stigma are involved. Many are afraid to touch or associate with those with disabilities. Helping kids of all abilities to be part of inclusive classrooms is an important part of what we do at this school in Arachaie, Haiti.

Stories like this are why we want to help resource more schools to include kids of all abilities.  All three girls desire to be nurses when they grow up. You can only imagine how well they will serve others having studied in such an environment.
